Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
1. What is the Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS)?
The YAS is a symposium made BY and FOR young people working in the micro or macroalgae areas, from both academia and industry. In addition to listening to our experts' talks, Young Algaeneers will also have the opportunity to discuss in groups divided by research topics, and present results and new ideas to their peers, under the guidance of a mentor experienced in the subject.
2. Who is a Young Algaeneer?
By young we mean people within the first 5 years in the algae domain. There is no limit of age, only experience!
3. Can I still participate if I am not a Young Algaeneer?
If you are not a young algaeneer anymore, you can still participate of course, but preference will be given to the Young Algaeneers. Senior Algaeneers are encouraged to consider participating as mentors.
4. Is there any scholarship to participate in YAS?
There are scholarships available for overseas Young Algaeneers, i.e. outside of Europe (continent and islands). In 2023 3 scholarships were awarded, covering registration fee and hotel stay.
5. Is accommodation included in the fee?
Accommodation is not included in the registration fee. The registration fee only includes the 3-day event (including coffee breaks and lunches).
6. Do you suggest any accommodation? Do you have a promotion code for the accommodation?
YAS2023 recommends the stay at Eva Senses hotel, the same location at which we will have our social dinner on the 10th of May. You can find all the relevant information here.
7. Could you provide an invitation letter for Visa application?
Invitation letters for visa purposes should be requested at [email protected].
8. How is the refund procedure if I registered but finally I cannot go?
Refunds must be requested be email at [email protected] until 1st of May.
9. How is YAS23 different from the previous editions?
YAS has evolved with time YAS Past Editions. We involved more participants and speakers from the Macroalgae sector; we merged academia and industry, inviting University Professors and Algae Companies CEOs to join us. Following the technological advances we have set up a meeting app, "Eventee", where the event will get social! Find out more on question 20.
10. Is the event hybrid?
Since we wanted to fully enjoy the return of in presence events, and due to the working groups sessions, hybrid format was not forecast. Only one of the talks will be held online.
BEFORE THE EVENT
11. Can you send me the abstract instruction and template?
The abstract instructions and template can be found here.
12. Can you send me the poster guidelines?
The poster guidelines can be found here. You can give wings to your imagination and create your own template based on the guidelines.
13. How will the poster presentation be?
You need to print your poster in A0 portrait orientation, with a width of 84.1cm (33.1 inches) and a length of 118.9cm (46.8 inches). Please bring the printed poster with you to the venue. When you arrive, you can locate the designated area for poster placement and find your poster number to ensure it is displayed in the correct spot.

17. How do I know if my participation is confirmed?
Your registration is confirmed ,upon reception of the payment, by email. If you need a formal acceptance letter please request one at [email protected].
18. Do you have an oral presentation part for participants?
There are no oral presentations from the participants during YAS2023. We thought instead of focusing on our own particular research, we can step back and look at how our research is contributing to that field development and how this last is evolving. What are the problems that need to be addressed? What solutions the Young Algaeneers propose? In this scenario a group discussion and confrontation with senior mentors will help to gather nice ideas to present in your Working Group’s project.
19. Is it possible to bring two posters for one registration?
Due to limited space and for equality in the voting process, only one poster per participant is allowed.
20. Is it compulsory to send an abstract or bring a poster?
No. YAS is, first and foremost a place for young algaeneers to meet and brainstorm with t
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
21. How will we get to the Algae local companies?
Bus transport has been organised to bring participants on day 1 and day 2 to visit GreenCoLab, CCMAR and Necton, which are outside the Penha campus. If you use alternative transports on your own, please let us know.
22. What’s Eventee?
Eventee is the social network to support YAS23 young format. It is an easy-to-use tool available on both mobile and web app, for organising events. The intuitive and beautiful interface allows participants to follow the programme online, including any last-minute updates. You can interact with live questions, live polls, and match-based networking. You will also want to use Eventee to meet the other participants in your WG and connect with them, along with all the other participants and organisers of YAS23.
23. How to download Eventee?
In the form we sent you by email, there is a QR code and an invitation link to join the event.
24. Is Eventee mandatory for YAS23?
Not at all. We supplied this useful tool to give participants more chances to know each other before the event and to stay in touch afterwards. If you do not have Eventee you can still go and talk to people, which is always the best option for networking.
25. What’s a working group?
During the registration process, you have been asked about your field of expertise. The committee divides participants in macro-working groups (WG) according to their choices. During the dedicated sessions, each WG will discuss the problematics and possible solutions, new ideas, projects, within their WG. A mentor will be present for a short time with you to guide the discussion. On the last day, each WG will present the results of the discussion through a PPT. An EABA board will be present to give feedback along with other participants.
26. What if I do not fit in the WG I have been assigned to?
All participants’ topics will be divided in macro-categories, to have the minimum number of WGs necessary. If your particular topic is under-represented, you will join the closest WG to your subject and you can contact the organisers if you would prefer another WG instead.
27. When will I know my WG?
WGs will be communicated one week before the event. After the end of registrations (15th April), we will send a questionnaire to confirm your scientific interests and assign the groups accordingly.
